ST. LOUIS – The Harris-Stowe State University men’s basketball team played host to the Park University Pirates on Sunday in an AMC matchup. The Hornets were defeated by the Pirates by a final score, 76-64, to fall to 15-11 on the season and 10-11 in AMC play.
This game served as senior day for the men’s basketball team. Prior to the start of the contest, Calvin Giles Jr(SR/Cleveland, OH)., Corey Wells Jr (SR/New Orleans, LA)., Nate Rigmaiden (SR/St. Louis, MO), Deandre Clark(SR/Orange, VA), Bear Clarkson (SR/San Antonio, TX), and Devonte Lash (SR/Akron, OH) were all recognized for their hard work and dedication to the program.
Park came out in the first half of the game and jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in the first two minutes of the contest. The Hornets settled in as the half progressed and went on a 16-4 run over the next few minutes to take a 19-12 lead with just under 13 minutes to play in the period. Harris-Stowe continued to push the tempo as the half progressed and were able to grow their lead to 12. Park made a run at the Hornets to end the half but ultimately Harris-Stowe took at 40-31 lead into the locker room. Nate Rigmaiden had a team high 20 points at the break.
The Pirates picked it up to start the second half and went on a 12-0 run to start the period to take a 43-40 lead in the game. They continued to push the tempo over the next few minutes and held a five point advantage midway through the half. The Hornets battled back and were able to cut the score to one, but an 8-2 run from Park put them up seven with three minutes to play in the game. Harris-Stowe did their best to get back into the contest in the final minutes but the Pirates closed them out down the stretch to hand the Hornets their second straight loss.
Nate Rigmaiden led the way for the Hornets as he finished with a team high 23 points. To go along with Rigamiaden, Deandre Clark finished with 12 points and Calvin Giles Jr. brought down a team high 12 rebounds to round out the top performers for Harris-Stowe.
The men’s basketball team is back in action on Thursday, Feb. 21 when they travel to Batesville, Arkansas, to take on the Lyon College Scots in an AMC matchup. The game is set to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
