KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Central Missouri’s Women’s Soccer and Women’s Basketball teams were honored as the Spire Sportswomen of the Year by the Kansas City Sports Commission. The Jennies were recognized at KCSC’s 45th annual awards banquet on Thursday, June 7 at the Kansas City Marriott Muehlebach Tower.
UCM Women’s Soccer won the MIAA Regular Season and Tournament Championships en route to a 26-0 National Championship season. It was the program’s first national title and the 26 wins also set a program record for wins in a season.
Less than four months later, Central Missouri added another National Championship as it won the Women’s Basketball title. The Jennies claimed the MIAA Regular Season crown with an 18-1 conference record and won their last six games for the program’s first National Championship since 1984.
The award is given to a local female athlete (or team) who is currently participating in amateur, high school, collegiate or professional sports. This athlete(s) exemplifies all of the positive aspects of sport and has made a positive impact on the Kansas City Community.
