SPRINGFIELD – Timely hitting helped the Evangel baseball team earn a split Saturday against William Woods University in non-conference action.
Evangel belted out 13 hits and three extra-base hits to pound William Woods in the first game, 9-0. The Crusaders took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning and then added another run in the bottom of the fourth.
Noah Suiter drove in four of the Crusaders’ runs going 3 for 4 while Pat Gaul scored four times and also drove in two runs finishing 4 for 5 at the plate.
Dalton Cook also posted multiple RBIs and hits going 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs in the win.
Bret Hoffman was solid on the mound scattering seven hits over six innings. Hoffman struck out seven and walked just one in the shutout. Levi Loughridge pitched the seventh striking out two for Evangel to help seal the game.
The Crusaders again took an early lead in the first inning but was unable to hold on as an extra-base error in the fourth inning gave William Woods a 4-1 lead.
The Owls would add another insurance run in the fifth as the Crusaders scratched across one in the bottom of the seventh.
Gaul stayed hot at the plate leading Evangel going 3 for 4 with a run scored. Jordan Yates drove home on the only RBI for the Crusaders as he went 1 for 1 with two walks.
Austin Dill pitched three innings of relief as he struck out four and allowed just one run after Hunter Hancock went three innings as well.
Evangel returns to the road next weekend for a four-game series at Kansas Wesleyan starting with a double-header on Friday.
